STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board, as expected, heard pushback from some residents Tuesday night on their proposed plan to close two rural schools, Atall and Hereford, and move Whitewood 5th grade to Sturgis Williams Middle School.
That’s due to a nearly $1.25 million dollar deficit being realized in the fiscal year 2026 budget. Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt says the deficit grew after getting new enrollment numbers.
Wormstadt says the closure of the two rural schools would save $252,000 through the reduction of 2 teachers, 4 para-professionals and operating costs. Approximately 20 students would be affected by the closure.
The Whitewood move would save approximately $64,000 through the reduction of one teacher. The plan also includes combining the Whitewood and Rural Principal, which was previously one position during the 2022-2023 school year.
Board members heard from residents concerned about the rural closures and adjustments in Whitewood ahead of last night’s FY2026 presentation.
Along with the proposed reductions and cuts, the board is also looking at other solutions, including a $350,000 tax increase and efficiencies proposed up to $470,000 to help with the budget deficit.
Wormstadt recommended to the board scheduling a special board meeting for Monday, October 27 at 5:30 pm to receive public input on the proposed budget corrections. He says each item proposed will be placed on the agenda for individual discussion and community input.
