DEADWOOD, S.D. — Behind nearly every favorite song lies a writer whose name might not make the headlines—but whose words and melodies shape the soundtrack of people’s lives. From songs that make listeners dance to those that bring tears or laughter, the storytellers behind the hits will take center stage this fall in historic Deadwood.

The 14th annual Wild West Songwriters Festival will return Oct. 16–18, bringing some of Nashville’s biggest songwriting names—and a host of talented regional and local artists—to venues throughout Deadwood for three days of intimate performances and storytelling.

Among the songs represented at this year’s event are chart-toppers such as “She’s Country” by Jason Aldean, “That’s Why I Pray” by Big & Rich, “Never Wanted Nothing More” by Kenny Chesney, and “International Harvester” by Craig Morgan. All were written by songwriters scheduled to perform at the festival.

Dubbed one of the “Best Live Music Festivals for Fans” and a “Top Ten Songwriter’s Festival You Don’t Want to Miss,” the event is a collaboration between the Deadwood Chamber & Visitor’s Bureau, Deadwood Mountain Grand, and local business leaders.

Returning this year is the regional songwriting competition, where artists can submit an original song for the chance to be among 14 finalists performing in the National Songwriting Rounds alongside industry veterans. The contest winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize and an invitation to perform during Wild Bill Days 2026.

Over the course of three days, the festival will feature free writer’s rounds in venues across Deadwood, giving fans a rare opportunity to hear the stories behind hit songs in an up-close, acoustic setting.

Already confirmed to perform are Danny Myrick, Sarah Buxton, Ronnie Bowman, Bridgette Tatum, and Tim James, among others. The performances begin Thursday evening and continue through Saturday.

Friday night will feature the Local Songwriters’ Jam at Deadwood Tobacco Co., highlighting regional artists and emerging songwriters. The festival culminates Saturday night with the National Songwriters’ Showcase at Deadwood Mountain Grand’s Event Center, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Tickets for the showcase are $10 at the door.

For music lovers, the Wild West Songwriters Festival offers a rare look into the creative process—where the heart of country music meets the soul of the Black Hills.

I will see you there!! I (Brandon Jones) am performing once, at 1pm at the Saloon #10 on Main St Deadwood.
