STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council at their meeting Monday night reconsidered the 2025 mill levy passed at a special meeting last week.

The reconsideration follows a notice that the 2024 certified equalized value by the Director of Equalization did not include the auditor office certified value that included utilities.

At last week’s special meeting, the council voted to maintain the 2025 mill levy at the same rate as 2024 at $4.13. However, Sturgis City Administrator Aaron Jordan says the actual effective 2024 mill levy is $4.09, not $4.13.

Using the $4.09 mill levy, results in 2025 property tax collected in 2026 will be just over $3.2 million dollars.

The council, as expected, approved keeping the mill levy at the same rate of $4.09.

The Sturgis City Council Monday night also approved a utility easement for Black Hills Power.

That easement is for an underground electric line across the Marcotte property. This removes an existing overhead power line located in a high-risk area that Black Hills Energy is working to eliminate.

It’s part of B.H.E.’s Public Safety Power Shutoff program where the utility could de-energize lines located in high risk areas during times of extremely high fire danger.
