Rapid City Operations Adjust For Native American Day

RAPID CITY- City of Rapid City offices will be closed Monday, October 13, in observance of Native American Day, South Dakota’s state holiday, resulting in adjustments to various municipal services and operations.

Due to the holiday, Monday’s trash collection will shift to Tuesday, with collections for the remainder of the week- Tuesday through Friday- remaining on their regular schedule. Residents are advised to leave out their bins until collected. The Rapid City Landfill, Rapid Transit System, and the Rapid City Public Library will also be closed on Native American Day. The Monument event center will be closed for the holiday.

Some city services will remain operational. The Roosevelt Park Swim Center will maintain its regular hours on Monday, with open swim scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. and again from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Additionally, the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena will be open for public skate from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Rapid City Regional Airport will be open for air travel, though administrative offices will be closed. The Rapid City Police and Fire Departments will be operating emergency services, but their administrative offices will be closed.

The holiday weekend in the Black Hills area is highlighted by major cultural events. The 37th annual He Sapa Wacipi Na Oskate Black Hills Pow Wow is scheduled for Friday, October 10, through Sunday, October 12, in the Summit Arena of The Monument. Events begin as early as 11 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The annual Indigenous Peoples Day parade will also be held in downtown Rapid City on Saturday, October 11, at 10 a.m. South Dakota was the first state to officially observe Native American Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Monday in October.
