Strenuous Rescue for North Dakota Hiker at Black Hills’ Hippie Hole

RAPID CITY, S.D. – First responders from multiple agencies successfully completed a difficult rescue in the Black Hills after a North Dakota hiker suffered a medical event on the rugged trail to Hippie Hole.

The incident was reported by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, which coordinated the multi-agency response to the popular but remote swimming hole located near Keystone, South Dakota. The steep and challenging terrain required an intense physical effort from the rescue crews.

Personnel from Pennington County Search and Rescue, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, Battle Creek Volunteer Fire Department, the Town of Keystone Ambulance Service, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the U.S. Forest Service-Black Hills National Forest were instrumental in the operation.

Rescuers reportedly worked in the heat, taking turns carrying the man back up the steep, unmarked trail to an awaiting ambulance. The effort highlights the inherent dangers and physical strain involved in emergencies at the remote location.

The North Dakota man was transported for medical attention. His condition was not immediately released by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities consistently warn visitors to be prepared with plenty of water and proper gear when attempting the challenging hike to the Hippie Hole area.
