RAPID CITY, S.D. – A woman faces multiple charges after her vehicle struck the Rapid City Police Department’s Southwest Precinct early Saturday morning, causing extensive damage to the building.
At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 21, a 2002 GMC Yukon was attempting to turn from Sheridan Lake Road onto Catron Boulevard when it lost control, according to police. The vehicle first hit a median, then veered across traffic lanes, went over a curb, and traveled down an embankment before hitting the police building.
The driver, 36-year-old Kelsey Herrald of Rapid City, was ejected from the vehicle before it hit the precinct. She was transported to a local hospital for serious, non-life-threatening injuries. No police officers were inside the Black Hills building at the time of the crash.
Police at the scene reported smelling alcohol on Herrald and observed signs of impairment. A preliminary breath test showed her blood alcohol content was .217, nearly three times the legal limit in South Dakota. Herrald was arrested for driving under the influence (second offense), driving without a valid license, and no insurance.
