STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate was found deceased in their cell Monday night.
In a release, the sheriff’s office says on September 15, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., an inmate at the Meade County Jail was found unresponsive in his cell. Jail staff responded promptly, initiating life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased.
The sheriff’s office says “We recognize the gravity of this loss and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones during this difficult time. Out of respect and due to standard procedures, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation has been contacted to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this death.”
The inmate’s identity was not released and stated the investigation will be headed up by the state D.C.I.
