STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council continued 2026 budget hearings at their meeting Monday night.
Up last night were budgets for City Administrator, Mayor and Council, Attorney, Finances, Planning and Permitting, Library, Community Center, Recreation, Auditorium and Human Resources.
The proposed city budget for City Administrator is up $50,200 from last year while the budget for Mayor and Council is down nearly $196,000 from 2025.
Also down this year is the Finance budget. The remaining departments are seeing increases over the year. Attorney is at $170,950; Planning & Permitting comes in at $305,219; Library is at $499,731; Community Center is $606,134; Recreation at $164,050; Human Resources at $109,398 and Auditorium at $24,857.
External budget requests from the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, Sturgis Economic Development Corporation, Sturgis Rally Charities and Prairie Hills Transit were also on the agenda.
The Chamber, who took over some of the city-sponsored events such as Music on Main in 2025, is seeking $167,816 for 2026 compared to $156,000 for this year. In exchange for the increased funding, the Chamber offered to take over the insurance policy for the summer time event, which would save the city between $5,000 and $6,000.
S.E.D.C., in the meantime, is seeking $135,000 for 2026.
