RAPID CITY – Black Hills Community Theatre is kicking off its 58th season with “The SpongeBob Musical,” a family-friendly show based on the popular animated series. The production, sponsored by Tim and Frances Becker, Scull Construction, and Black Hills Federal Credit Union, opens Sept. 26 at the Historic Theater, located in The Performing Arts Center of Rapid City.
The musical’s story follows SpongeBob and his friends in Bikini Bottom as they work to save their home from a looming volcanic eruption. Directed by Matthew Vidal, the show features songs from musicians like Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, and David Bowie. Vidal, who is the theatre director at Stevens High School, says the cast’s “youthful and energetic spirit” is the best part of working on the show.
The cast includes several local actors, with Chris Wheeler as SpongeBob, Zach Allen as Patrick, and Claire Rumery as Sandy. The production also highlights the talent of area teachers and students, with Assistant Director Justin Speck from Central High School and Music Director Vonnie Houchin from Southwest Middle School involved.
“The SpongeBob Musical” will have performances on Sept. 26, 27, Oct. 3, and 4 at 7 p.m., with matinee shows on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.. Tickets are priced from $25-$34 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Box Office, by phone, or online at bhct.org.
