Motive remains unclear, suspect in Charlie Kirk shooting said to have left-leaning views
WASHINGTON (AP) — Investigators have not yet determined a clear motive in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, but Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Sunday that 22-year-old suspect Tyler Robinson has expressed “leftist ideology” and may have been radicalized online. Friends and family told authorities Robinson spent significant time exploring “the dark corners of the internet,” and anti-fascist messaging was found engraved on bullet casings used in the attack. Robinson, who isn’t cooperating with law enforcement, reportedly disliked Kirk and the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, students who witnessed Charlie Kirk’s assassination are reckoning with trauma and grief. As investigators spent the weekend digging deeper into suspect Tyler James Robinson ahead of his initial court appearance, the university community is mourning Kirk and taking steps to resume classes on Sept. 17. At a makeshift memorial near the university’s main entrance, people have been leaving flowers. On the quad where the Turning Point USA co-founder was shot, a crew has begun taking down tents and banners and scrubbing away reminders of the killing.
