Solid Waste Division Adjusts Garbage Collection for Chapel Valley

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Solid Waste Division has announced an update to garbage collection for the Chapel Valley neighborhood, effective the week of September 8, 2025. The change comes in response to new weight restrictions on the Chapel Lane Bridge, which have prevented the city’s standard garbage trucks from accessing the area.

To maintain service, the division has received approval to purchase a smaller side-load garbage truck. In the meantime, crews are using three rear-load trucks equipped with can tippers. This temporary solution allows for the safe emptying of residential garbage containers.

Beginning next week, Chapel Valley residents can resume placing their garbage dumpsters at the curb. The city has outlined several reminders for residents. Collection days will not change, but residents are advised that pickup times may be later than usual and to have their garbage out by 7 a.m.

All garbage within the containers must be bagged and tied, with the dumpster lid completely closed. Dumpsters must be placed four feet from any obstacles, including fences, vehicles, mailboxes, and other cans.

Curbside recycling and yard waste pickup remain suspended. Residents can drop off recycling and yard waste at three 24/7 collection sites: Fitzgerald Stadium, West Boulevard North, and the Rapid City Landfill.

The Solid Waste Division will continue to provide updates via the Rapid City Solid Waste Facebook and X pages, as well as through traditional communication channels. These adjustments are a result of the bridge restrictions and are intended to protect the Chapel Valley community. The city’s team remains committed to maintaining reliable service.
