Meade County Commission first September meeting highlighted by 2026 budget discussion

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission’s first September meeting dealt mainly with the 2026 budget Tuesday.

Commissioners are looking at a $28-million dollar budget for 2026, with highways roads and bridges in the county making up the largest portion of that.

The 2026 Public Works budget, which includes roads and snow removal, is just over $11 million dollars. That is up from nearly $7-million in 2025.

Commissioners list total expenditures for 2026 at $28,096,221. 2025 expenditures were just over $23.4 million.

Total revenue for 2026 is estimated at just over $25 million, with property taxes making up $13.4 million. That translates to a total appropriation of $29,513,995 for 2026.

Commissioners Tuesday also heard from a number of outside agencies, requesting funds from the 2026 budget. A total of 16 outside agencies have requested $185,206 for 2026. County libraries have requested $59,308 and those dealing with opioid addiction have requested $105,750.

Commissioners will continue discussion on the budget at the September 23rd meeting with hopes of passage by the end of the month.
