Gladys Maryann Cox

Gladys Maryann Cox was born November 14, 1928, in Rural Sturgis, SD to Jakob and Margaret (Lorang) Weyrich. She was the 5th youngest of twelve children. She graduated from Sturgis Brown High School and went to Black Hills State University.

Gladys married Isom Gayle Cox of Rural Vale on November 15, 1947. They purchased the farm east of Vale in 1946.They raised their two sons, Darrel and Douglas and daughter, Donna on the farm. Gladys started a dairy farm with her husband in the 60’s on which she worked hard alongside Gayle. She loved to travel and shop around the world on cruises, trains, planes, bus or car.

Gladys was busy in the local activities in her community. She loved and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nisland’s American Legion, and the Vale Dance Hall and Community Club. She loved to sew clothes for her daughter, quilt, and embroidery. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and playing golf. Gladys loved to play cards with relatives and neighbors. Gladys was married to Gayle for 33 years.

Gladys, 96 died August 29, 2025, at Heartland Healthcare in Spearfish, SD.

She is survived by her sons, Darrel and his wife Nancy of Vale, SD and their children, Jessica, Justin (wife Jerri and their children Kara, Brooke, Ella and Peyton), Jamie (husband Domico Rodriguez and their sons DJ and Devon), Douglas and his wife Reva of Vale, SD and their children Kyle (wife Desiree, and their children Kaylie (husband Adam Haughey and son Kaiden), Braydon, and Ryleigh), Gayle (wife Sarah and their children Everhett and Charlotte), Tyler, Camylea (daughter, Evelyn).  Daughter Donna and her husband Lloyd Trautman of Pottsboro, TX and children Jeff (wife Kendra and children Scott (wife Morgan), Adam, and Natalie), Christy (husband Jason Taroni and children Ashley and Nolan) and sister-in-law Karen Weyrich.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Gayle, Harold Puckett, and Vernon Brown, her parents, her bothers Victor, Leo, Frank and Paul, her sisters Louise, Gertrude, Alice, Clara, Helen, Dorothy and Mary.

Flowers are not requested, and a memorial has been established.

Visitation for Gladys will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 2 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.  A Vigil Service will follow at 7:00 PM.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 3 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell.  Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
