RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Treasurer’s Office is warning citizens of a scam targeting taxpayers in Rapid City and across the Black Hills. Reports have been made of fraudulent phone calls from people claiming to be from a South Dakota County Treasurer’s Office, seeking to collect taxes over the phone.
According to a release from the Pennington County Treasurer’s Office, these calls are a scam. County Treasurer Annette Brant emphasized that her office will not call residents to collect taxes and urged caution, especially as tax deadlines approach.
Brant advised that if you do not own property in South Dakota, you do not owe property taxes to any South Dakota county. If you do own property in the state and are unsure of your tax status, you should contact the appropriate county’s Treasurer’s Office directly. The Pennington County Treasurer’s Office can be reached at (605) 394-2163.
Anyone who receives such a call is advised to report it to local law enforcement. For questions or to report a scam, residents can also contact the South Dakota Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-300-1986 or visit consumer.sd.gov.
