RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City man with a history of violent offenses was sentenced to prison on his fifth, sixth, and seventh felony convictions after he assaulted law enforcement and a fellow inmate.
Jon Dillon, 37, was sentenced by Judge Joshua Hendrickson for three separate incidents that occurred between 2023 and 2024.
In September 2023, Dillon led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Pennington County, reaching speeds over 130 mph and driving the wrong way on SD Highway 44. The pursuit ended when Dillon reached the reservation.
Two months later, while out on bond and under the influence of drugs, Dillon stole a vehicle and again led law enforcement on a pursuit. After abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot, he threw large rocks at a police canine and three officers. According to prosecutors, this was Dillon’s second aggravated assault against law enforcement.
The final charge stemmed from an incident that occurred about a year later while Dillon was incarcerated. After a fellow inmate testified in a federal jury trial, Dillon brutally attacked him in what authorities said was a deliberate act of retaliation, repeatedly kicking the victim in the head. The victim sustained significant injuries that required medical attention.
At the sentencing hearing, Senior Deputy State’s Attorney Olivia Siglin requested a 25-year prison term, citing Dillon’s “clear pattern of violence and disregard for the rule of law.”
Judge Hendrickson sentenced Dillon to 20 years for aggravated assault on law enforcement, 2 years for aggravated eluding, and 10 years for riot in a jail. All sentences will run concurrently.
