CUSTER, S.D. – The Custer County Sheriff’s Office says a 35-year-old man from Saint Paul, Minnesota, is facing multiple charges after evading law enforcement in Custer State Park.

On Thursday, August 14th, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a Park law enforcement officer stopped a vehicle on the Wildlife Loop Road for a traffic violation. The driver, however, had other plans and fled the traffic stop.

Despite efforts to stop the vehicle, it continued along Wildlife Loop Road towards Highway 16A.

When the vehicle reached the intersection, a Deputy attempted to deploy a tire deflation device, but the driver maneuvered around it and continued eastbound on Highway 16A. The Deputy made another attempt to deflate the tires at the junction of Iron Mountain Road and Highway 16, resulting in the vehicle turning onto Iron Mountain Road.

The suspect’s vehicle speeds were between 20-40 miles per hour and given the circumstances, a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) was executed by a Custer County Deputy, successfully forcing the vehicle off the road and rendering it inoperable.

Officials say the driver was not cooperative and a taser was used to help subdue him.
