Sturgis, S.D. (AP) โ PopROCKS is back at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and lead singer Kia Brown is once again lighting up the Black Hills like a disco ball at a biker bar.
Known for impersonating pop legends from Tina Turner to Beyoncรฉ with Vegas-worthy precision, Brown says the bandโs past year has been a whirlwind of military bases, international adventures, and unforgettable moments, including one very determined fan in Bahrain.
โWe were doing hookah with some guys on the street and using Google Translate to talk,โ she said, laughing. โWe woke up the next morning and this guy had followed our band Instagram and liked every single post dating back to the first one. And he gave me his phone case. I meanโฆ Bahrain loves us!โ
Brown joined PopROCKS just shy of two years ago, and her energy is unmistakable. Whether sheโs performing in South Dakota or flying halfway across the globe to entertain the troops, she shows up with contagious enthusiasm.
โOur manager works with Time Music Agency, and weโve built a great relationship with the USO,โ she explained. โWe went overseas from Thanksgiving to just before my birthday, performing for troops in the Middle East and Africa. I got to shoot guns and even learn how to save civilians in a mock drill. Not your typical day at the office.โ
For the uninitiated, PopROCKS is a musical impressionist group with three musicians and three vocalists, all committed to mimicking the sound, look, and choreography of music icons. Brown doesnโt just sing a Beyoncรฉ song. She becomes Beyoncรฉ, Coachella outfit and all.
โMy favorite right now is Donna Summer,โ she said. โBut honestly, it changes with the crowd. I might wake up not wanting to do Beyoncรฉ, but then halfway through the show Iโm like, yep, Beyoncรฉ really is that bitch.โ
Despite the glitter and glam on stage, Brown remains grounded. She started in theater, never sang pop music until she got this gig, and pours her creativity into choreography.
โAll the Lizzo dances? Thatโs all me,โ she said proudly. โSome of itโs pulled from music videos, but I choreograph most of it based on how the songs make me feel.โ
Her performance philosophy? Itโs not about fame or flash. Itโs about storytelling.
โIโve always said I just want to be a storyteller,โ she said. โIf someone comes up after the show and says, โWhen you did Whitney Houston, it brought me back to 1986 in South Dakota,โ thatโs everything. Thatโs why I do this.โ
Brown is also full of surprises, like the fact sheโs learning Japanese and dreams of one day performing in Japan.
โIโm on day 600 of Duolingo,โ she said. โI love the culture, and Iโve been speaking the language for years.โ
But for now, sheโs focused on the next gig: a Halloween performance at Guantanamo Bay.
โNo idea how that even came up,โ she admitted. โBut theyโre excited to have us, and weโll be back Halloween day. Iโm pumped.โ
Whether itโs on a naval base, a main street stage, or a hookah lounge halfway across the world, Kia Brown brings stories to life with sequins, sweat, and a whole lot of soul.
โWeโre not just doing a show,โ she said. โWeโre giving people memories.โ
