PHILIP, S.D. – Contributing to the community and serving as an inspiration to all, Billy Markwed has been named as the 2025 Grand Marshal of the Scotty Philip Days Parade.

At 91 years old, Billy is a living testament to the values that built Haakon County: faith, hard work, community, and family. Born and raised right here, Billy has spent his entire life on the family ranch established in 1906—still living on the same quarter of land where the original house and barn stand as proud symbols of generational legacy.

In 1956, Billy married Arlyne, and together they raised two daughters, Kim Marso and Cindy Bresee. Family has always been at the heart of Billy’s life, and he considers the closeness of his family a cornerstone of his success. He believes that staying true to your word, showing respect, and living with honesty and integrity are the keys to a meaningful life.

Billy has devoted his career to agriculture and the livestock industry, where he has become a beloved figure across the region. He served as an auctioneer at the Pierre Livestock Auction for 25 years and continues to serve as a fieldman for the Philip Livestock Auction, now going on 28 years. When asked what he loves most about his work, he doesn’t hesitate: “Meeting unforgettable people.”

The life-long rancher believes that Philip is the heart of the best cattle country around, and he takes immense pride in being part of its success.

A man of many talents, Billy is also a competitive horseshoe thrower, having won numerous tournaments over the years. His enduring energy and friendly spirit are matched only by his deep roots in the community. He continues to worship at Deep Creek Lutheran Church, the very place he was baptized as a baby.

When asked for his best advice, Billy keeps it simple: “Don’t be afraid of hard work. The harder you work, the more you accomplish.”

His life has been a shining example of that principle.

“We are honored to have Billy and Arlyne Markwed lead this year’s parade.,” said a Philip Chamber of Commerce representative. “Their enduring love, lifelong commitment to agriculture, and dedication to faith and family make them the perfect choice to represent the heart and soul of our community.”
