RAPID CITY, SD—Due to positive community response, the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department’s Aquatics Division is extending a series of summer fitness sessions and also scheduling a fall series of workouts.

Organizers had scheduled a four-week series of fitness sessions at the outdoor AARP FitLot Fitness Park from July 7 to August 1 and will not extend the sessions through August 15. Due to interest and attendance, a special two-week series of fitness classes is scheduled August 18-29 when the Roosevelt Park Swim Center is closed for annual maintenance. In addition to the fitness classes, a series of water exercise classes is also being offered during the Swim Center closure period.

The current workout sessions are scheduled Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30-7:15 a.m. During the Swim Center closure, the additional two weeks of outdoor fitness classes are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:15 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 a.m.  The water exercise classes are scheduled Monday through Friday during this two-week period at 10 a.m. at the Swim Center’s 50-meter outdoor pool.

“We’d scheduled the fitness sessions as a four-week class but we’re going to extend it because of the great attendance,” said Swim Center Exercise Coordinator Sue Crossman. “There’s a great level of interest in the community and we want to extend the classes a couple weeks and also bring forth a fall session of workouts.”

Crossman said a four-week series of fitness classes is planned for September 8 to October 4 at the FitLot Park, located between the Roosevelt Park Swim Center and Ice Arena, 125 Waterloo Street.

Registration is required, and participants can purchase a pass and sign up for classes at the Roosevelt Swim Center or online at https://rapidcity.activityreg.com or call 605-394-5223.

The classes are operated by a certified group instructor with emphasis on cardio, endurance, bodyweight exercises and strength training  FitLot Resistance opportunities include elliptical, stair stepper, chest press, hand cycle and resistance bands.

Swim Center Exercise Coordinator Sue Crossman is coordinating the sessions, which are low-impact workouts for any level.

When not utilized for classes, the FitLot area is available for free use by the community during scheduled Rapid City Park hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The AARP-sponsored outdoor fitness park was dedicated in August 2019.
