Kay was born on February 23rd, 1938 to John and Laura Eddy. She had many wonderful memories growing up on the Eddy Brother’s Ranch close to Dupree, SD. Kay was the youngest of the eight Eddy children and was spoiled by them all. She had a special relationship with their Uncle Ralphy and thought of him as a second Father. When Kay was 10, John and Ralph sold the Dupree Ranch and retired to Spearfish Valley. Kay attended Spearfish High School and graduated in 1956 and then spent a brief semester at SDSU in Brookings SD before transferring back home to BHSU in Spearfish. She soon met her first husband Richard “Dick” Dahlman as he had moved to the Black Hills from Vermillion, SD to continue his career with North Western Bell. They married and had three boys. ABC as she called them, Alan, Bryan, and Clark.

Mom was a great cook and seamstress and loved playing the piano and electric organ at home and church. Kay worked various jobs until she found her niche as a very successful Shaklee Products Representative working out of the business office that Dick had built in the basement of their Rapid City home. The boys received an early lesson in what it takes to run a family business when “Freight Day” came every Thursday and they hauled box after box of Shaklee products to the basement. We often wished Mom wasn’t so good at the sales gig.

But life moved on and as sometimes happens, Kay and Dick divorced, both eventually re-marrying. Later on, Kay married Virgil Simons, moved to Sturgis, SD, and eventually out to Virgil’s family ranch near Enning, SD. Kay enjoyed being a rancher’s wife and stepmom to Virgil’s son Kelly and daughters Karen and Krystal. Ranching, farming, hunting and lots of fishing were a large part of the Simons family life and Kay loved it all. Kay had been sewing from a young age, making some nice outfits for herself and her family. Clark looked especially cute in his sailors outfits. Kay soon turned the ranch house into a sweater and quilt factory excelling in both ventures. Her quilts were award winning and all gifted to family and friends. Her favorite quilt is named “Laura” after her mother who she lost when she was a teenager.

Kay is survived by her son Alan, his son Ben, Ben’s wife Emily and their two sons Gabriel and Noah all of Boise ID. Her son Bryan, his wife Laura of Gillette WY, their children Mitch Hackman of Boulder CO., Clint Hackman and his wife Sara of Gillette, and Janet Dahlman of Denton TX. Also, Clark and his wife Jen, and their daughters Spencer and Lauren all of San Diego, CA. Her stepson Kelly and his wife Marcie, their son Shae, their daughter Jessie, her husband Rio and their children Riggs, Wrenli, and Ryah. Her Stepdaughter Karen. Karen’s daughter Anita and husband Brandon Silver and Karen’s son Jimmy Simmons. Karen’s husband Fred and his children Nick and Crystal Parks of Mandan, ND. Ali (Parks) and Chris Norheim of Bismarck, ND with their sons Adler and Hartley. Virgil’s youngest daughter Krystal of Ft Pierre, SD and her children, Roman Spaid and his wife Lainey of Sioux Falls. Their children Natalie, Greta, and Capri. Emily, her husband Tyler Reiman of Ft. Pierre, and Krystals youngest, Hailey Spaid. Kay is also survived by her sisters in law Irene (Larry) and Maryann (Marshal) and many nieces and nephews.

Kay is the last of John and Laura’s eight children all of whom were blessed to have the calm loving influence of Uncle Ralphy in their lives from day one. Family always comes first with the Eddy’s, well, that and homemade ice cream as we carry on a Legacy of love that can only come from the loving and forgiving Father, Son and Holy Spirit who loved us first.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Spearfish United Church of Christ, tapestry fund.
