STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board has passed first reading of a new policy that will govern the use of cell phones and smartwatches for the upcoming school year.

Meade 46-1 School Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt says the new policy will limit the use of personal digital devices during the school day. That means students will need to have their devices shut down while in school.

Wormstadt says there are several reasons for the new policy, including increasing student focus and academic performance, reducing digital overload and social media stress, creating a safer, more inclusive school environment, supporting equity across classrooms and to encourage proper use of school-issued devices.

He says implementation may vary slightly by building and age group. Specific procedures and any approved exceptions will be outlined in your school’s Student Handbook.

Wormstadt says they understand that staying connected with your child is important. He says if you need to reach your child during the school day, parents or guardians can contact the school office. If your child needs to reach you in an emergency, school staff will assist in facilitating that communication.

Second reading of the new policy is set for July 16 with third and final reading set for the August 11 meeting.
