STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission this week approved a joint powers agreement with the State to begin design and environmental work for a portion of New Underwood Road.

The county is working with the D.O.T. in hopes of transferring ownership of the heavily traveled road over to the state.

New Underwood Road is an important corridor, especially for trucks, that connects State Highway 34 to I-90 at Rapid City. A portion of the road in Meade County is in desperate need of repair.

The agreement approved by the commission outline’s the State’s proposal for a jurisdictional transfer and define financial responsibility for design and environmental work.

Meade County had sent suggested changes to the initial agreement to the State Department of Transportation, who then offered an updated agreement to the county.

With the approval, the county has sent back the agreement to the state and is waiting to hear back.
