Court Upholds President Trump’s Authority Over National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that President Donald Trump acted within his legal authority when he deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to protests over immigration raids. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily reversed a lower court decision that had found the president’s move unlawful due to opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The unanimous decision cited evidence of violence during the protests, including attacks on federal officers and property, and emphasized the federal government’s responsibility to maintain safety and security. The court also noted that while state governors are typically consulted, they do not have the power to override a president’s order in such circumstances. The case, which may influence how future National Guard deployments are handled, will continue to move through the legal system.
