Pierre, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) has appointed Laura Scheibe as its new deputy secretary, the department announced today. Scheibe brings more than a decade of experience within the DOE to her new role.
Scheibe most recently served as the director of the Division of College, Career, and Student Success, as well as the state’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) director. In these capacities, she oversaw key programs including Jobs for America’s Graduates – South Dakota (JAG-SD), student wellness and support initiatives, and the GED program.
Secretary of Education Joe Graves praised Scheibe’s dedication and leadership. Her previous work with JAG-SD, CTE, and dual credit programs has benefited numerous students across South Dakota, preparing them for success after high school.
Scheibe expressed her honor in receiving the trust of Secretary Graves and the department team. She stated her commitment to serving all South Dakota learners and helping educators prepare students to reach their full potential.
Before her tenure with the DOE, Scheibe served over a decade as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State, with assignments both internationally and in Washington, D.C. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a graduate certificate from the University of South Dakota. Scheibe and her husband, Aaron, reside in Pierre with their two sons. This development is significant for education in Rapid City and the Black Hills region, as leadership changes in the DOE often influence statewide educational initiatives.
