Minn. Lawmakers Targeted in Politically Motivated Attack in Twin Cities Suburbs

Authorities say two Democratic legislators and their spouses were deliberately targeted early June 14 in a politically motivated attack in suburban Minneapolis. At around 2 a.m., State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot in their Champlin home. Police later discovered shotgun shells and learned that Yvette had shielded their daughter during the attack. About 90 minutes later, the suspected gunman, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, dressed as a police officer went to the home of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park, fatally shooting her and her husband, Mark. Boelter also shot at responding officers before fleeing. Investigators say Boelter left behind a manifesto and a list of about 70 political figures and abortion rights advocates, suggesting extremist, anti-abortion motives. After a two-day manhunt, authorities arrested Boelter following a shootout. Governor Tim Walz characterized the heinous shootings as “acts of political violence” that threaten democratic norms and prompted stepped-up security for public officials.

The directive calls for the largest mass deportation effort in U.S. history, with an emphasis on sanctuary jurisdictions and high-crime urban areas. In a Truth Social post, Trump defended the move, saying ICE agents face threats from “Radical Democrat politicians” but would not be deterred. The announcement sparked legal challenges, including a lawsuit from California over National Guard involvement, as tensions grow between federal and local authorities.
