South Dakota Newspapers Suffer Delivery Delays as Postal Service Reroutes Mail Through North Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. — Small-town newspapers across South Dakota are experiencing significant delivery delays due to recent Postal Service changes, frustrating subscribers and threatening both advertising revenue and readership. Publishers report delays of up to nine days for deliveries between towns just 95 miles apart, such as Armour and Sioux Falls. Some mail that was previously processed in Huron is now routed through Fargo, North Dakota, before returning to South Dakota, adding days to delivery. The situation has caused confusion among subscribers and concern among publishers who rely on timely distribution. Despite a $3 billion Postal Service cost-cutting initiative and $3 million in planned upgrades to the Huron facility, no clear guidance has been given to publishers on changes to mail sorting procedures. The South Dakota NewsMedia Association is urging better communication and a meeting with Postal Service officials to resolve the issue.

Trump authorizes additional 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles, US officials say

LOS ANGELES (AP) — President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard members to help respond to protests in Los Angeles over immigration raids. The authorization came after a day of protests Monday. The 2,000 Guard members are an addition to the 2,100 Guard troops the president previously mobilized for the protests Sunday morning. Trump also deployed 700 Marines to help them Monday. Gov. Gavin Newsom called the deployments reckless and “disrespectful to our troops.” Trump said Monday that the city would have been “completely obliterated” if he had not deployed the Guard.

Protests intensify in Los Angeles after Trump deploys hundreds of National Guard troops

JERUSALEM (AP) — A Gaza-bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists has arrived at an Israeli port after Israeli forces stopped and detained them. Israel was enforcing a longstanding blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the Israel-Hamas war. The boat was accompanied by the Israeli navy. It arrived in the port of Ashdod on Monday evening. That’s according to Israel’s Foreign Ministry. A legal rights group representing the activists says they are expected to be held at a detention facility before being deported. The activists were protesting Israel’s military offensive and its restrictions on aid into Gaza.

Ukraine says Russia launched the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the war

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian air force says Russia launched 479 drones at the country in the war’s biggest overnight drone bombardment. It also said 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine. The attacks usually start late in the evening and end in the morning because drones are harder to see in the dark. Russia has targeted civilian areas of Ukraine with Shahed drones since the start of the war. The U.N. says the attacks have killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians. A recent escalation in aerial attacks has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the front line.

Judge dismisses Justin Baldoni’s $400M lawsuit against ‘It Ends With Us’ costar Blake Lively

HOLLYWOOD (AP) — A judge has dismissed the lawsuit that Justin Baldoni filed against his “It Ends With Us” costar Blake Lively after she sued him for sexual harassment. The ruling is the latest development in the bitter legal battle surrounding the film. Lively sued Baldoni in late December. Baldoni then sued Lively and her husband, “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds, accusing them of defamation and extortion. The judge ruled that Baldoni can’t sue Lively for defamation over claims she made in her lawsuit, because allegations made in court are exempt from libel claims. And the judge ruled that Baldoni’s claims that Lively stole creative control of the film didn’t count as extortion under California law.
