Press Release: West Central High School Names Dave Hollenbeck as New Head Boys Basketball Coach

Hartford, SD — West Central High School is proud to announce the hiring of Dave Hollenbeck as the new Varsity Head Boys Basketball Coach. With more than 30 years of coaching experience and a legacy of excellence, Hollenbeck brings one of the most accomplished résumés in South Dakota high school basketball history to the Trojan program.

Hollenbeck previously served as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at St. Thomas More High School in Rapid City for 29 years, where he compiled an impressive 532–156 career record. That mark ranks him third among active South Dakota coaches and eighth all-time. Under his leadership, the Cavaliers made 16 State Tournament appearances, won four State Championships (2006, 2007, 2011, 2012), reached the Final Four 10 times, and appeared in six State Title games. In 2020, his Cavaliers entered the State Tournament as the No. 1 seed before the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

His teams also claimed 19 Conference Championships and recorded 15 seasons with 20 or more wins. Coach Hollenbeck is known for developing disciplined, high-character teams and has mentored four South Dakota Mr. Basketball award winners, a state record— Eighteen players went on to compete at the collegiate level, including four who played at the NCAA Division I level.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Hollenbeck to West Central,” said Superintendent Eric Knight. “His coaching accomplishments speak for themselves, but what impressed us most was his commitment to building strong student-athletes and leaders. We’re excited for what’s ahead for Trojan basketball.”

Hollenbeck shared his excitement about the opportunity: “I’m honored to join the Trojan family and lead the boys’ basketball program at West Central. This is a proud and passionate community, and I look forward to building on that tradition. I’m excited to get to work with our student-athletes and help them grow both on and off the court.”

Coach Hollenbeck and his wife, Denise, have four sons: Connor (Idaho State), Caleb (Marshall University), Caden (a high school sophomore), and Colton (entering 7th grade).
