Motorcyclist killed in Spearfish crash

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Spearfish Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred on Thursday, May 29, at approximately 1:45 p.m.

In a release, police say they were notified of a collision involving a 2020 Ford Escape passenger vehicle and a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle at the intersection of Christensen Drive and Colorado Boulevard in Spearfish.

Witnesses described the motorcycle as traveling eastbound on Colorado Boulevard and the passenger vehicle traveling westbound on Colorado Boulevard.

The passenger vehicle turned left toward Christensen Drive in front of the motorcycle, causing the motorcycle and operator to strike the passenger side of the vehicle.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 71-year-old male resident of Spearfish, was transported to the Monument Health Rapid City Hospital and later died. The operator was not wearing a protective helmet.

The operator of the passenger vehicle, 91-year-old Edward A. Haugen of Sturgis, was issued a citation for failing to yield right of way to the motorcycle.

The accident remains under investigation.
