PIERRE, S.D. – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the South Dakota Highway Patrol is reminding all travelers to make safety their top priority. With increased traffic expected across the state, troopers will be out in force to help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend and return home without incident,” said South Dakota Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Casey Collins. “Our troopers will be highly visible and actively working to reduce crashes through enforcement and public engagement.”

To help keep South Dakota roads safe, the Highway Patrol encourages motorists to follow these key safety tips:

  • Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
  • Buckle up — every trip, every seat.
  • Never drive impaired — plan ahead for a sober ride.
  • Stay focused — avoid distractions and keep your eyes on the road.
  • Check travel conditions at www.sd511.org or by calling 511.

The 2025 Memorial Day crash reporting period begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 26th. During this time period last year, there were 163 reported crashes, with 32 reported injuries. No fatalities were reported during the holiday weekend. Of the 32 injured, 20 were motor vehicle occupants and 18 wore a seatbelt. The others injured were eight motorcyclists, two ATV riders and two bicyclists.

“Reducing the number of fatal crashes on South Dakota’s highways remains a top priority,” said Office of Highway Safety Director Robert Weinmeister. “Far too many lives are lost because of poor decisions, failing to buckle up, speeding, or driving under the influence. This weekend, we urge everyone to make smart, safe choices.”

Whether you’re heading to a family gathering, exploring South Dakota’s scenic routes, or simply enjoying the long weekend, please travel safely and responsibly.
