SURF invites photographers to join global photo competition

Lead, SD (May 12, 2025) — The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) invites amateur and professional photographers to capture research and inspiration happening above and below ground during the 2025 SURF Photowalk.

SURF is proud to host the event as part of the Interactions Global Physics Photowalk, a worldwide initiative at research laboratories around the world.

SURF’s participation in the global walk photowalk includes three phases.

  • Phase 1: Neutrino Day Register in advance andvisit Lead, SD on Saturday, July 12, 2025, for the annual citywide science festival hosted by SURF. Photograph the festival and submit up to three images for jury review.
  • Phase 2: Exclusive Underground Photowalk A small group of eight photographers selected from Phase 1 will receive a guided underground tour to photograph SURF’s unique science spaces. Selected photos from both Phase 1 and Phase 2 at SURF will be eligible for entry in the Phase 3 global competition. Local winning photos from all the photowalks around the world will also be featured on the Interactions Global Physics Photowalk website.
  • Phase 3: Global Physics Photowalk SURF is proud to be one of the international laboratories participating in the 2025 Global Physics Photowalk. The top three images from SURF’s Phase 1 and 2 photo competitions will also advance to the global judging phase. The top winners from around the world be featured in CERN Courier and Symmetry.
