On Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025, Kathryn June Cole passed away peacefully in her home, exactly as she wished, with her beloved daughter, Jayme, by her side. She left this world with grace, joining her Savior, Jesus Christ, in Heaven.
Kathryn was born on June 6, 1952, in Kadoka, South Dakota, to Kenneth and Naomi Taft. She was raised on a ranch near Norris as one of nine siblings. She attended high school in Spearfish, graduating in 1970, then earning her Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Black Hills State College. Her family shared a proud tradition at this institution—her mother had graduated from it when it was Black Hills Normal School, and her daughter, Jayme, later earned her degree from what is now Black Hills State University. Three generations of strong women, shaped by the same alma mater.
While in Alaska, Kathryn married Jay Cole. She taught in Ellendale, North Dakota, before moving to Sioux City, Iowa, where her daughter Jayme was born. In 1977, she settled back in Spearfish, returning to her beloved Black Hills, and began working at RSVP, becoming its director in 1981. A lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Kathryn found great joy in singing in the choir.
Kathryn met Dick Schmeltzer, and the two fell deeply in love. Tragically, their time together was cut short when Dick passed suddenly on July 3, 1996—a loss that made Fourth of July weekends forever difficult for her.
Kathryn devoted 21 years to RSVP before having to retire early due to Multiple Sclerosis. Despite the challenges of her illness, she remained active, dedicating her time to volunteering at the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery, always accompanied by her beloved dog, Mr. Dillon. When her grandson, Ty, arrived in her life, she embraced retirement fully. She became a familiar sight in Spearfish, rolling through the park in her electric cart, rain or shine, Mr. Dillon at her side.
Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Jayme (Reggie) Hunt; her grandson, Ty Hunt; many brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Maureen and Aileen; sister-in-law, Peggy; infant brother, James Ora; and her love, Dick Schmeltzer.
Through every challenge, she remained steadfast in her independence—her greatest source of strength. As a single mother, as a woman, and as someone battling a debilitating condition, Kathryn defined herself through her independence, her ability to remain independent meant she was winning the fight. We would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to those who helped Kathryn maintain her independence—especially Tori, Paula, Stacy, and Kristy. You all made her life so much better.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Kathryn’s memory to the National M.S. Society or Meals on Wheels. Kathryn’s life was one of strength, service, and love—her story lives on in those she touched
Kathryn faced adversity with unwavering strength and grace, embodying her motto:
She might have M.S.—M.S. doesn’t have her.
