Vote at City Hall this week; City’s Contest is observance of Drinking Water Week

RAPID CITY, SD—The submissions are in and now it’s time to vote!

By last week’s deadline, the public submitted 39 entries as part of the ‘Water Sustains Us’ photo contest, hosted by the City’s Water Division.  Now it’s time for the public to vote for their favorites.

The contest is hosted by the City’s Water Division and is being held in conjunction with the American Water Works Association annual Drinking Water Week in America, May 4-10. The public can vote by viewing the photos in the lobby of City Hall and choosing their favorite through the end of this week (Friday, May 9).

All 39 submissions are displayed in the City Hall lobby with the public selecting a ‘People’s Choice’ award. A ‘First Place’ winner will also be voted on by a committee including Mayor Jason Salamun and Water Superintendent Eric Boyda. In addition to the public submissions, an additional dozen submissions were entered by city employees. A City Employee ‘Best in Show’ selection will also be made.

Winners will be announced Monday, May 12, and the ‘People’s Choice’ winner will receive a South Dakota State Park 2025 Entrance License.

“We had a great level of turnout from the public and the submissions really captured numerous aspects of the ‘Water Sustains Us’ theme,” said Lysann Zeller, Sustainability & Stewardship Program Development Manager for the City’s Public Works Department. “The purpose of the contest was to help bring awareness to the importance of drinking water in Rapid City. The submissions really show off the creativity of the public.

“We encourage the public to check out the photos and select a favorite.”

The photos will be used by the City’s Water Division for future publications and marketing materials, including the 2026 Drinking Water Report and website.
