DEADWOOD, SD — Sugar Shack owner Trevor Kautzman has announced the intention for the business to be open and in operation by Memorial Day weekend of this year.
The restaurant, which was demolished following a three-alarm fire in December was a long-time favorite of both locals and visitors alike, provided classic American comfort food amid the beauty of the black hills. Since the fire, their Facebook page has been providing regular updates on the reconstruction efforts, leading to a lasting curiosity on the project.
“It has taken a lot longer then we were hoping, but once we got out of the ground it has been moving fast.” said Kautzman on the progress, going on to state that “Since the previous building was over 80 years old we had a few challenges getting the new one started”. As safety standards and code have changed since the original building was constructed, this new building was required to be moved back from the highway, and have integrated fire suppression systems.
When asked about public interest, and what he believes makes the Sugar Shack so special for those who have grown up with it, or come to love it during visits to the hills, Kautzman thanked the community for their support and love in the rebuilding process, and said “The Sugar Shack is an Icon of the Black Hills because of its location. We’re a destination spot. That’s part of what makes us special. The food is always amazing but the atmosphere of being at a spot in the middle of nowhere just hits different”.
