Camp Crook, SD – Maria Ester Oleson, born on April 6th, 1942, in the small town of Camp Wood, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 22nd, 2025, in Spearfish, South Dakota. She was a beacon of love and generosity throughout her 83 years, touching the lives of many with her faith-filled spirit.
Ester grew up in Texas, where she completed her education through the eighth grade. From a young age, she assisted her mother, Modesta Alvarez, in caring for her siblings, perfecting her culinary skills and establishing a hard work ethic that would later serve her well in life. She carried these lessons of love and service throughout her life, always putting family first.
Ester ran two very successful Mexican restaurants, first in Texas and later in South Dakota. Ester met and married the love of her life, Oliver Leroy Oleson, with whom she shared 43 years of marriage. Ester’s dedication extended beyond her business as she was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. Her home was a warm and welcoming place where all felt cherished and valued.
Ester’s family was her pride and joy. She is survived by a loving daughter, Tami White; a loving son, Donny (Jenny) Powell; and her adored grandchildren, Jacob Russell, Jared Stenerson, Zion Powell, Kim (Alex) Mattson, Skye Rodriguez, Amy Powell, and Nikki Rodriguez. Her legacy continues through her eight great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her later years. She also leaves behind three brothers, Ruben Balderas, Chendo Saiz, and Terry Balderas, as well as many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Oliver Leroy Oleson; her parents, Santiago Balderas, Sr. and Modesta Alvarez; her sister, Rafaela Balderas; and brothers, Ernest, Jesse, and Jimmy Balderas.
Ester’s contributions to her community were significant. She was a proud member of the Grand River Chapter #162 Order of the Eastern Star, where she devoted 43 years of service. She served at Worthy Matron in 1986. Her interests were a reflection of her love for life and her family. Ester was an exceptional cook, often found in the kitchen preparing meals that would become the centerpiece of family gatherings. She partnered with her husband on their family ranch in Harding County, South Dakota, where they built a life together. Sewing was another of Ester’s passions, and she was an active member of the Sewing Guild for many years.
In her leisure time, Ester found pleasure in spoiling her great-grandchildren, listening to Mexican music, painting beautiful landscapes and portraits, and watching her favorite movies. Known for her fiery spirit, she famously enjoyed Serrano Peppers with every meal. Above all, Ester will be remembered as a loving and generous soul, whose faith was her guiding light.
A quote that Ester often shared with her family, attributed to Mother Teresa, encapsulates the philosophy she lived by: “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” This simple yet profound statement mirrored the way Ester approached every aspect of her life—with great love.
Maria Ester Oleson’s life was a tapestry woven with love, dedication, and faith. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her legacy will live on through the lives of her family and the many people she touched. She will be dearly missed, yet her spirit will remain a comforting presence to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
