Rapid City, SD – In a recent and disheartening turn of events, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has terminated federal grant awards to the National CASA/GAL, impacting their ability to provide crucial support and resources to local chapters across the country. The DOJ stated that the grants “no longer effectuate the program goals or agency priorities,” including “protecting American children.” However, National CASA/GAL strongly disagrees, emphasizing their mission to advocate for children and youth who have experienced abuse and neglect. This decision will undoubtedly affect the well-being of over 200,000 children involved in child abuse and neglect proceedings.

While this news is concerning, it underscores the critical importance of local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and GAL (Guardian ad Litem) organizations. In Rapid City, SD, the local CASA organization, the Seventh Circuit CASA Program stands as a beacon of hope for children navigating the complexities of the child welfare system. They currently serve 87 children in foster care with 6 staff members and 56 volunteers. There are still 450 children on the waiting list.

Local Impact, Lasting Change

CASA volunteers are the heart and soul of these organizations. They are the voices for children who have been silenced by neglect, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. These dedicated individuals ensure that these vulnerable children are seen, heard, and protected in real-time. They provide unwavering support, advocating for their best interests and working to increase the likelihood of them developing into healthy adults, breaking cycles of violence, drug use, and abuse.

Tanya Fritz, the board chair of the Seventh Circuit CASA Program states,”Our small staff is able to support hundreds of children because they act as a catalyst for healing communities. But they can’t do it alone. They need your help.”

How You Can Make a Difference

  • Donate: Even small donations can have a significant impact on the lives of children in need. Your financial support will help ensure that CASA volunteers have the resources they need to advocate effectively.
  • Volunteer: Consider becoming a CASA volunteer. By dedicating your time and compassion, you can directly impact a child’s life, offering them stability, support, and a voice in the courtroom. CASA provides support, training, and administrative oversight.
  • Spread the Word: Share this story and raise awareness about the vital work of CASA organizations. Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to get involved.

In the face of national funding cuts, the local Seventh Circuit CASA Program remains a vital resource for children in need. By donating your time or money, you can help ensure that these vulnerable children receive the support and advocacy they deserve. Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a world of difference.
