Effort is part of Arbor Day observance; Mayor Salamun to share proclamation
RAPID CITY, SD—Students from Rapid City’s Pinedale Elementary School students will join crews from the Rapid City Parks Department to plant trees at the school this Friday as part of the City’s annual Arbor Day observance.
Two fifth grade classes from the elementary school are scheduled to take part in the event, set to begin at 9:15 a.m. Friday. The students will be assisting crews and receiving hands-on training in planting approximately 18 trees of numerous varieties. As part of the event, Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun will share an Arbor Day mayoral proclamation.
“We look forward to Arbor Day every year as our crews work with the kids and share with them about the planting process,” said Jordan Holt of the Rapid City Parks Maintenance Division. “It’s a great way for the kids to learn how to plant trees and to take part in the process. The day is as much fun for our crews as it is for the kids.”
In recent years, Parks crews have teamed with students to plant trees at Horace Mann Park, Wilson Park, Robbinsdale Park, Raider Park at Rapid City Stevens High School and the Rushmore Little League grounds.
Rapid City has also been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation with its Tree City USA designation. It is the 45th consecutive year Rapid City has received the distinction.

WHAT: Approximately 56 students from two fifth grade classes will be assisting City Parks crews to plant trees as part of 2025 Arbor Day observance. Students will gather in front of the school’s sign where a few trees will be planted and Mayor Salamun will share an Arbor Day proclamation. The students will then be teamed in small groups with Parks crew members to plant trees.
