Elaine Evelyn Nelson

Elaine Nelson, born on July 9, 1942, in Long Valley, South Dakota, passed away on April 16, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Elaine’s life was deeply rooted in faith and family. As an original member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church when it was just beginning to take shape, she remained a devoted participant throughout her life. Her commitment to her church never wavered; even in her later years, she welcomed regular visits from the pastors who had become part of her spiritual family. Elaine had a spirited personality that remained with her until the very end. Known for her feisty nature and strong will, Elaine faced life with determination and heart. She found joy in the simple pleasures—especially old-school westerns like Gunsmoke and the timeless music of Elvis Presley, he truly was the love of her life. Followed by a close second, by a hair, the purple PT Cruiser, the Mcrib and last but definitely not least, the Arby’s orange cream shake. Speaking of simple pleasures, Elaine was not tech savvy. Jamie and Tyler spent countless hours of tech support on her locked Facebook account or her phone that wouldn’t ring! (Volume was off) Mom, don’t touch any buttons was an everyday occurrence! She also spent over 20 years making and decorating beautiful cakes at Super Dooper and Family Thrift, brightening people’s special day with her endless creativity. She also spent her time fishing in Hermosa with a bamboo pole that may or may not have provided the catch of the day! For all of you who are friends with Elaine on the “Facebook” you will find her quick wit in her daily “dad” jokes she shared and endless dog and cat pics, recipes and beautiful photos. These passions brought comfort and familiarity throughout her days. A funeral service honoring Elaine’s life will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025, at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 833 E Fairmont Street in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Elaine was preceded in death by her father Jake, mother Viola, brothers Roger, Eddie, Dean and Harem and sister Mardella and beloved niece Dorothy.

She is survived by her two sons Jamie and Tyler and their wives Chris and Dorcas, 8 grandkids and 7 great grandkids.

The service will begin at 11:00 AM and conclude at 1:30 PM. Elaine knew she was ready to go home—to be reunited with loved ones who had gone before her. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and peace to all who carry her spirit forward.
