Adventure, thrills, joy, mystery, and fun—BHCT has something to captivate everyone!

Black Hills Community Theatre is proud to announce their 2025-2026 Mainstage Season. The 58th
Season includes three plays and two musical productions ranging from new works to reinvented classics and including characters ranging from tragic heroes to relatable neighbors. The season will provide a variety of opportunities for over fifty local actors, as well as designers, directors, and stage managers. While actors will get to stretch their skills with both dramatic and comedic roles, local designers will create the underwater community of Bikini Bottom, a Midwestern farm, a black and white Film Noir movie set and more. The season offers a little bit of everything for audiences and artists alike.
The Mainstage season begins with The SpongeBob Musical based on the series by Stephen Hillenburg with book by Kyle Jarrow and original songs by an array of pop artists. When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world – especially when paired with a fun pop score by artists like Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, and David Bowie to name a few. The SpongeBob Musical will perform in the Historic Theater September 26th-October 5th, 2025.
Next up is Antigone adapted by Lewis Galantiere from the play by Jean Anouilh. The brave Antigone dares death to bury her brother’s corpse against the decree of the King, her uncle Creon. In spite of her love for Creon’s son and the promise of a golden future, Antigone chooses to stand up to oppression and give her brother a rightful burial no matter the cost. First performed in German occupied France, this adaptation of the Greek tale utilizes modern language and humor to bring the classic tale to life. Antigone will perform in the Studio Theater November 7th-23rd, 2025.
The next show in the Studio Theater is Calendar Girls by Tim Firth. After spending time at the local hospital, Annie and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee for the waiting room. With the help of four fellow Women’s Institute members, they decide to be bold and pose nude for an “alternative calendar”. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the
small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. This humorous, yet poignant, story is based on the 2003 movie of the same name. Calendar Girls will perform in the Studio Theater January 16th-February 1st, 2026.
After that, we return to the Historic Theater for City of Angels with book by Larry Gelbart, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by David Zippel. In the late 1940s, Stine, a bookish writer of detective stories, struggles to adapt his crime novel into a workable screenplay. As Stine tries to maintain some integrity in the backstabbing world of Hollywood, his protagonist, a hardboiled private eye named Stone, fights for survival in a city full of criminals and opportunists. In a clever design choice, the stories are told on a split stage: Stine’s world is in full color, while Stone’s appears in black and white. City of Angels will perform in the Historic Theater March 13-22, 2026.
The final Mainstage show of this 58th Season is Eminent Domain by Laura Leininger-Campbell. When Rob Macleod’s family farm is threatened by construction of a pipeline underneath it, the event will light a fuse, threatening to divide the family he loves. While futilely fighting the changing times, Rob clashes with his daughter, who long ago left home, and his son, who has patiently stayed by Rob’s side. The real threat is a Heartland that doesn’t include the next generation. Eminent Domain will perform in the Studio Theater May 1st– 17th, 2026.
BHCT’s season will also include the young Cherry Street Players performing two one act comedies (10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and Everyone Gets Eaten by Sharks) in December and Diary of a Wimpy Kid in April, the annual Holiday Gala, shows from the Well Done Players including Four Old Broads and The Women, play readings as part of the Discovery series and other exciting events and programs!
