Rapid City, SD – Black Hills Playhouse’s Dakota Players and Storybook Island are excited to announce two
brand new Theater Day Camps for children entering grades K–8, taking place at Storybook Island in the
summer of 2025.
Each two-week session offers young performers a chance to step into the world of live theater, sparking
creativity through acting, movement, and design. Camps are held Monday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to
2:00 PM.
Session 1: Space Pirates
June 16–28, 2025
Session 2: You Look Marvelous
July 14–26, 2025
Led by experienced teaching artists from the Black Hills Playhouse, campers will engage in drama games,
learn stage fundamentals, and explore the technical aspects of theater such as costume and set design. Each
session culminates in a final performance where students showcase their talents to family and friends. No
previous theater experience is required—just imagination and a willingness to have fun!
About the Shows:
Space Pirates (Session 1)
This original production tells the story of Alex, a student who feels out of place during a school museum
trip—until an alien spaceship unexpectedly beams them and their classmates aboard. The adventure
intensifies when their ship is attacked by space pirates. Through this exciting journey, Alex discovers confidence and her classmates learn to appreciate her unique qualities.
You Look Marvelous (Session 2)
A comedic retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” this play follows the fashion-
obsessed Suzerain, who is deceived by tricksters claiming to create invisible garments seen only by the
competent. As the Suzerain parades through the town in the so-called new outfit, it takes the honesty of a few
brave children to reveal the truth and lift the veil of vanity.
