APID CITY, SD—The public is invited to an open house celebrating the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department’s new City greenhouse. The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29 from 9-11 a.m. at 2915 Canyon Lake Drive.
The new 4,800 square-foot facility is located next to the City’s old greenhouse at the City’s maintenance facility on Canyon Lake Drive. A portion of the old greenhouse, which was over four decades old, has been retained for seeding operations. The Rapid City Council approved a new facility in September 2023.
The new greenhouse provides for additional storage, environmental controls and better conditions to grow and maintain the approximately 25,000 flowers and plants used in the City’s parks and frontage areas each summer. The new facility will also allow for the crews to grow plants and not rely as much on outside vendors for various species of plants.
“We’re very excited to show off the new greenhouse to the public,” said City Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Biegler. “The new facility will improve the ways we can grow and maintain plants and flowers, and opportunities to do more locally in a modernized and upgraded facility.”
