Michael Jay Champagne passed away on March 31, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota, at the age of 50. Born on August 16, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Michael’s warmth and vivacious spirit were evident from an early age.

After graduating from Central High School in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Michael continued his education at the University of Nebraska, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. His love for learning and commitment to personal growth led him to obtain a Master’s degree from Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. Michael served his country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1992 until 1996, a testament to his strong sense of duty and patriotism.

Michael’s passion for education blossomed into a rewarding career as a teacher and coach. He worked in several school districts in Nebraska and South Dakota. Michael’s latest role was as an administrator with Rapid City Area Schools in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Michael was a self-proclaimed “sports nut.” He relished watching football and basketball, and he brought his enthusiasm and strategic thinking to coaching his teams. His love for cooking was well-known among his family and friends, and he seized any opportunity to create meals that brought people together. Those who knew Michael would describe him as not only kind and friendly but also remarkably handy; he had a knack for fixing and building things.

He is survived by his son, Alec Champagne; daughter, Kalleigh Champagne; the mother of his children, Amanda Anderson Champagne; his devoted mother, Connie Roark; his loving sister, Lindsey (Katie) Turner Roark; niece, Abby Pika; and his grandmothers, Jeannie Burkinshaw and Wardene Roark. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Roark, and grandfathers Stanley Burkinshaw and Jackson Roark.

In the words of Helen Keller, “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Michael’s legacy of love, laughter, and the joy he brought to others will forever remain a part of those who loved him.
