BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men’s and women’s rodeo teams earned a seventh and fifth place finish respectively at the Jackrabbit Stampede this weekend as they secured nine top-10 finishes. Highlighting the Yellow Jackets trip to Brookings was a pair of top-10 finishes by Emma Ohm, who finished fourth in the breakaway roping and then added a ninth place finish in team roping. On the men’s side Terran Talsma and Swade Reis earned top-10 finishes in steer wrestling and tie down roping respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN’S RODEO
- Terran Talsma notched a top-10 finish for Black Hills State in steer wrestling, his first event placing of his collegiate career as he recorded an eighth place finish. He posted a time of 10.4 seconds on the long go to qualify for the short go finals, however he was unable to record a time on his second go around.
- For the second time this season, Swade Reis placed within the top-10 of the tie down roping event, earning ten points towards his season total. On the long go he notched a time of 14.8 seconds before being unable to post a time on the short go.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN’S RODEO
- After jumping into the top-5 of the regional rankings following the last rodeo, Haley Husted notched her third consecutive top-3 finish in goat tying with a third place finish in Brookings. She earned 95 points this weekend towards her season total after recording a time of 14.0 seconds on two go arounds. On the long go she tallied a time of 6.7 seconds and followed it with a time of 7.3 seconds on the short go.
- The No. 4 cowgirl in the region in goat tying, Raylee Fagerhaug added a sixth place finish in the event, earning 50 points with a total time of 14.5 seconds on two go arounds. She notched a time of 7.0 seconds on the long go and followed it with a time of 7.5 seconds on the short go.
- Cashae McGee rounded out the trio of Yellow Jackets in the top-10 of the goat tying event in Brookings, as she recorded a total time of 17.8 seconds on two go arounds. On the long go she clocked a time of 7.3 seconds and then added a time of 10.5 seconds on the short go.
- Emma Ohm, the No. 5 breakaway roper in the nation, added her fourth top-5 finish of the season and secured 100 points this weekend at the Jackrabbit Stampede. She was tied for the lead in the event following a long go time of just 2.7 seconds, but a time of 3.9 seconds on the short go saw her fall to fourth place with a total time of 6.6 seconds on two go arounds.
- Jayda Reinert earned a fifth place finish in barrel racing, her second top-5 finish of the season in the event, as she recorded a total time of 27.96 seconds on two go arounds. While just 0.16 seconds separated first and fifth place, she tallied a time of 14.07 seconds on the long go and then went on to clock a time of 13.89 seconds on the short go as she earned 50 points.
- Leading the Yellow Jackets in the team roping event, Sidney Hanson paired up with Lanny Brooks of Dickinson State University for an eighth place finish. The duo posted a time of 9.6 seconds on the long go; however, they were unable to clock a time in the short go finals.
- Also competing in the team roping event, Ohm added another top-10 finish for the weekend as she paired up with Koy McAllister of Mid-Plains Community College for a ninth place finish. They recorded a time of 9.7 seconds on the long go, but were unable to notch a time in the short go.

As the regular season begins to wind down, the Black Hills State University men’s and women’s rodeo teams are set to host the annual Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede in two weeks. Starting on Friday, April 25, the 2-day event will feature a slack at 12 p.m. and a performance at 7 p.m. on the first day, while the rodeo will conclude with slack at 10 a.m. and the short go finals at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Seven Downs Arena.
