RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man has been sentenced to time in federal prison for stealing firearms.

Zachary Coats, 28, was sentenced to four years and two months in federal prison for his two counts of theft of a firearm.

The counts stem from incidents in August 2023, when Coats broke into several local, federally-licensed firearm dealerships and stole multiple firearms including a Beretta 12-gauge shotgun, a Benelli 12-gauge shotgun, a USA Military Surplus .30 caliber rifle and a Stoeger 12-gauge shotgun.

After Coats was identified as the suspect by law enforcement, he directed his wife, Danielle, to take the firearms from their residence to another family member’s home.

Danielle pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen firearm and was sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison.
