RAPID CITY, SD—Tonight’s Rapid City Council meeting will include a pair of proclamations and recognition of a youth team recently crowned as national champions.

Mayor Jason Salamun and Rapid City Council members will recognize and honor coaches and players of the Rushmore Thunder Youth Hockey’s boys varsity team that recently won the USA Hockey 2A National Championship title in Irvine, California.  Team members and coaches will be honored during the awards and recognitions portion of the City Council meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Council Chambers of City Hall.

Mayor Salamun will also present a pair of proclamations at the meeting, honoring local safety telecommunicators as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week April 13-19 and recognizing Rapid City’s spirit of volunteerism in honor of National Volunteer Week April 20-26.

Rushmore Thunder

The Rushmore Thunder boys varsity hockey team completed an impressive season with a 30-1 record, capping off the season by winning five of six matches and the national title at the championship tournament March 30.  The national tournament title came two weeks after an impressive performance at the state tournament in Watertown in mid-March.

“The Rushmore Thunder boys varsity team represented Rapid City in the national spotlight, showcasing their skills and talents on the ice,” said Mayor Salamun.  “I look forward to recognizing the team for their outstanding efforts and congratulating them on representing their team, the Rushmore Thunder hockey program, their families and our community in such an impressive way to a national audience.”

National Telecommunicators Week

In his proclamation recognizing local telecommunicators, Mayor Salamun cited the impressive work of local officials.  Several local telecommunicators are expected to attend Monday’s proclamation presentation.

“Public Safety Telecommunicators are the single vital link for our police officers, deputies, firefighters and paramedics by monitoring their activities by radio, relaying information and insuring their safety,” the mayor states in his proclamation.  “Prompt emergency response is critical to the protection of life and preservation of property…public safety telecommunicators exhibit compassion, understanding and professionalism during the performance of their job each and every day.”

National Volunteer Week

In his proclamation recognizing local volunteers as part of National Volunteer Week April 20-26, Mayor Salamun cites national statistics ranking South Dakota among the top 10 states for volunteering with more than 37 percent of South Dakotans volunteering through organizations and over 57 percent providing some form of assistance to neighbors. The month of April is set aside to honor volunteers with recognition events and tributes, acknowledging those who step up and provide their time and talent to help their communities and citizens.

Helpline Center, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP+) and United Way of the Black Hills are among groups to be recognized with the proclamation.

“Throughout the year, Rapid City and area citizens volunteer their time, skills and talents to helping neighbors, local organizations and businesses,” said Mayor Salamun.  “The efforts of local volunteers and local volunteer organizations make our community a better place to live.”

The public is welcome to attend Monday’s City Council meeting.
