Meade County, SD – At approximately 10:37 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to a reported fire at the Covered Wagon RV Park, located in the 1400 block of Sturgis Road. Upon arrival, Meade County Sheriff’s deputies discovered an RV fully engulfed in flames.

Fire personnel from Piedmont Fire and EMS, along with the Black Hawk Volunteer Fire Department, responded swiftly to the scene. Their coordinated efforts successfully contained the fire to the single RV, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

During the response, witnesses identified the RV’s resident, a female who had been observed driving erratically in the vicinity. Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle still on scene. When ordered to exit the vehicle, the driver refused to comply.

After being removed from the vehicle, the individual exhibited signs of impairment consistent with drug and/or alcohol use. She was subsequently arrested and transported to the Meade County Jail.

The suspect, identified as Darian Johnson of Piedmont, SD, has been charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), 2nd Offense (SDCL 32-23-1).

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

All suspects have a presumption of innocence, until proven otherwise in a court of law.
