Takini Wildfire 30% contained, forward progress stopped

TAKINI, S.D. – A large wildfire burning on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation is now 30% contained.

The large began as three separate fires that merged together on Monday afternoon. The fire is 17 miles in length and has burned 37,685 acres.

Block burns down overnight Monday into Tuesday successfully stopped forward progress of the fire and terrain features prevented total burn out.

The fire was burning in a rough river break area along Cherry Creek and led to the evacuation of the Takini school and community. No structures were involved according to information gathered from the field.

A Type 3 Incident Management Team took over operations of the fie on Tuesday. The Incident Command has Blackhawk helicopters from the South Dakota National Guard working the fire.

The cause of the fires remained under investigation.
