Mary Ann Scott

Mary Ann Scott, 91, Sturgis, died at her home on Friday, March 7, 2025.
     A Rosary will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 13, 2025 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Sturgis SD, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with Father Timothy Castor officiating Interment at Black Hills National will follow at 12:30 p.m.
     Mary was born November 6, 1933, at Lodgepole, SD, to Alphonso and Winifred (Kelleher) Cornella.  She attended rural schools and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in New England, ND, in 1952.
     She attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish and then taught in rural schools in Perkins County. While attending college, she met her husband-to-be, William S. “Bill” Scott, who was in the Air Force stationed in Rapid City.  They were married in Bison, SD, on December 15, 1953.
     While raising their family of seven children, they lived in Spearfish and Lead before moving to Sturgis in 1965.  Bill worked at Homestake Mining for 32 years.  Mary worked in the dietary department at Fort Meade for 26 ½ years until her retirement in 1996.
     Mary was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the altar society.  She also belonged to Holy Family Circle.  Mary helped with Meals on Wheels.
     She is survived by one son, Luke (Kim) Scott, Sturgis; three daughters, Laree Scott, Leticia Scott, and Brianna Scott, all of Sturgis; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Leah and Luana; and one son, William Scott, Jr.; four brothers; and three sisters.
     A memorial has been established to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
