RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office say an investigation is underway into the death of an inmate.
Sunday morning, March 2, 2025, during routine cell checks by correctional staff, a Pennington County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Officer found a 53-year-old male inmate from Rapid City deceased in his cell at the Pennington County Jail. He had been booked into the facility the night before.
Life saving measures were performed by jail staff and responding paramedics, however they were unsuccessful and the male was pronounced deceased.
According to protocol, the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is handling the death investigation and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office will assume coroner responsibilities.
Immediate family members have been notified of the death. We are giving family members time to make notification before we release the male’s identity tomorrow. Any further information should be coordinated with Tony Mangan at the Attorney General’s Office.
