STURGIS, S.D. – The city of Sturgis will have races in two of the four wards in the upcoming Sturgis Municipal Election scheduled for Tuesday, April 8.

Today, Friday, Feb. 28, was the deadline to file nominating petitions to be placed on the ballot.

Mark Chaplin and Dave Murtha will face off in Ward 3, and Terry Jensen and Steve Shuck will vie for the Ward 4 seat.

Those currently serving in the City Council positions are Alex Usera, Ward 1; Tony Dargatz, Ward 2; Mark Chaplin, Ward 3, and a Ward 4 seat that was vacated when Kevin Forrester became mayor.

That means Usera and Dargatz, along with Mayor Kevin Forrester are unopposed and their names will not be on the ballot for the April 8 election to be held at the Sturgis Community Center.

The deadline to register to vote in this election is March 24. Registration may be completed during regular business hours at the county auditor’s office, city finance office, secretary of state’s office, and those locations which provide driver’s licenses, SNAP, TANF, WIC, military recruitment, and assistance to the disabled as provided by the Department of Human Services.

You can pick up an absentee ballot or vote at Sturgis City Hall beginning on March 24.

The City of Sturgis holds municipal elections two out of every three years. Once elected, city council and mayoral terms are for three years.

Those elected will take the oath of office at the May 5 Sturgis City Council meeting.
