STURGIS, S.D. – Due to the recent dry, windy weather, there are some burn bans being enacted in western South Dakota.
This week, the Meade County Commission enacted a burn ban. The ban was effective as of Thursday, February 27.
Also this week, the Lawrence County Commission adopted a burn ban ordinance.
The ordinance introduces a fee to burn ban violations north of Interstate 90.
During fire dangers of high or above, open fires are restricted north of I-90. Open fires are described as any fire whose fuel source cannot be turned off and on again.
Violators are now subject to a fee of $50 and/or 30 days in jail.
